Preparing for Spring: Early Maintenance Tips for Chicago Drivers

By the time March rolls around in Chicago, your car has survived somewhere between three and five months of salt, slush, subzero mornings, and potholes deep enough to lose a shoe in. It might look fine from the outside — or it might look like it drove through a war zone — but either way, there's damage hiding underneath that you need to deal with before spring driving season starts.

The smart move is to get ahead of it. Every year, we see a rush of customers in April and May who waited too long, and by then the problems that were cheap to fix in March have turned into expensive repairs. A rusted brake line that could have been caught with an inspection becomes an emergency brake failure. A small coolant leak that started during a February freeze becomes an overheating engine on the first 80-degree day.

The Post-Winter Inspection: What to Check

Undercarriage and Body

This is the big one. Chicago dumps roughly 300,000 tons of road salt on the streets every winter, and your car has been driving through all of it. Salt accelerates corrosion on:

- Brake lines — steel brake lines rust from the outside in. A rusted-through brake line means you lose brake pressure, which means you don't stop. This is genuinely dangerous - Fuel lines — same issue, different fluid. A rusted fuel line is both a breakdown risk and a fire hazard - Exhaust system — mufflers, catalytic converters, and exhaust pipes all corrode faster with salt exposure - Subframe and suspension mounting points — structural corrosion here can compromise the car's integrity - Wheel wells and rocker panels — the body panels most exposed to salt spray

What to do: Get an undercarriage wash — a real one, not just the $3 add-on at the drive-through car wash. Then bring your car in for an undercarriage inspection. We put it on the lift and check every line, mount point, and structural element. This takes about 30 minutes and costs nothing when done with another service.

Fluid Assessment

Winter is hard on every fluid in your car:

- Engine oil — if you're due for a change, don't wait. Winter driving (short trips, cold starts, lots of idling) contaminates oil faster than summer driving - Coolant — check the level and condition. If it's been more than two years since your last coolant flush, spring is a good time - Brake fluid — absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point. Contaminated brake fluid can cause spongy brakes or brake fade in hot weather - Transmission fluid — check for color and level. If it's dark or smells burnt, schedule a service - Windshield washer fluid — switch from winter formula to regular. Winter fluid with de-icer additives can leave residue on your windshield in warm weather - Power steering fluid — check the level. Low power steering fluid usually means a leak somewhere

Tires

If you ran winter tires, it's time to swap back to all-seasons or summer tires once daytime temperatures consistently stay above 45°F. Winter tire rubber compounds soften in warm weather, leading to: - Faster wear - Longer stopping distances - Mushy handling

Timing in Chicago: Usually late March to mid-April. Watch the 10-day forecast rather than the calendar — we've had snow in April plenty of times.

If you ran all-season tires through winter, inspect them for: - Tread depth — penny test: insert a penny head-first into the tread. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, your tread is below 2/32" and the tires need replacing - Uneven wear — indicates alignment problems, likely from pothole impacts - Sidewall damage — bulges, cuts, or bubbles from curb strikes or pothole hits. A damaged sidewall is a blowout risk — replace the tire - Tire pressure — temperature swings from winter to spring cause pressure fluctuations. Check and adjust all four tires plus the spare

Brakes

Winter driving wears brakes harder than any other season. The constant stop-and-go on slushy roads, plus the abrasive effect of salt and sand getting between pads and rotors, can take months off your brake pad life.

Signs you need brake service: - Squealing or grinding when braking - Longer stopping distances than you remember - Brake pedal feels different (softer, lower, or pulsating) - Vehicle pulls to one side when braking

Windshield and Wipers

Chicago winter destroys wiper blades. The constant freeze-thaw cycle, ice scraping, and road salt spray dry out the rubber and cause streaking. If your wipers chatter, skip, or leave streaks, replace them. Good wipers cost $15-25 each and take two minutes to install.

While you're at it, inspect your windshield for chips or cracks. Temperature changes cause small chips to spread. A chip repair costs $50-75. A windshield replacement costs $300-800. Fix chips early.

Battery

Your battery worked overtime all winter cranking a cold engine. Now is a good time to test it — because if it's marginal, it'll die during the first hot week of summer when AC use puts extra electrical load on the system.

We offer free battery tests. If your battery is over 3 years old, get it tested regardless of how it's performing.

The Spring Maintenance Shortlist

If you're only going to do a few things, prioritize these:

1. Undercarriage wash and inspection — catch salt damage before it becomes structural 2. Oil change — fresh oil for a fresh season 3. Brake check — make sure your brakes survived winter intact 4. Tire inspection and pressure check — swap winters if applicable 5. Wiper replacement — $30 for visibility and safety

Why Early Spring Service Beats Late Spring

Two reasons:

Availability: March is our slowest month. You can usually get an appointment within a day or two. By May, everyone who procrastinated is calling, and wait times stretch to a week or more. Compounding damage: Problems found early cost less. A small rust spot on a brake line is a $150 repair. A corroded line that bursts six weeks later is an emergency tow plus $400+ in repairs, plus the risk of an accident. That math only goes in one direction.

Spring Maintenance Cost Guide

Frequently Asked Questions

When exactly should I do spring maintenance in Chicago?

March is ideal. The worst of winter is over, but it's before the spring rush. If you ran winter tires, wait until daytime temps are consistently above 45°F for the swap, but everything else can be done as soon as you want.

How much does a full spring service cost?

A basic spring package — oil change, brake inspection, tire check, fluid top-off, and visual inspection — runs about $80-$120 at our shop. Add an alignment check and wiper blades, you're looking at $150-$200 total. That's less than one emergency repair.

Should I get my car detailed after winter?

It's not just cosmetic — removing salt from paint and body panels prevents long-term corrosion. A good wash and wax in spring protects your paint for the rest of the year. At minimum, get the undercarriage washed thoroughly.

My car seems fine after winter. Do I still need an inspection?

Yes. The most expensive winter damage is the kind you can't see or feel yet — corroding brake lines, weakened suspension bushings, and tiny coolant leaks don't announce themselves until they fail. A 30-minute inspection catches these before they become roadside emergencies.

Can salt damage void my car warranty?

Salt damage itself isn't covered by warranties (it's environmental wear), but if salt corrosion causes a covered component to fail, you may have a case. Keep records of regular washing and maintenance to strengthen any warranty claims.

Get Ahead of Spring

Your car worked hard this winter. Give it 30 minutes on a lift and a fresh oil change, and it'll reward you with a reliable spring and summer. Wait too long, and you'll be the person calling us from the side of Lake Shore Drive in June with steam pouring out of the hood.

Schedule your spring checkup today. We'll get your car ready for the good weather ahead.
